Fiat Motorsport Club
The Fiat Motorsport Club has huge history in Ireland, beginning when the Fiat 128 3P and Coupe variants broke away from the slick shod “Production Saloon up to1300cc” class to form a budget class. The class became a huge favourite with the crowds and was soon christened “Fiatnam” due to the close and competitive racing. In fact, these original cars are now, due to recent rule changes, eligible to race with the Historic HRCA class in Mondello, and you can now see a 128 Coupe and a 127 running with the oldies this year!! In time the 128 variants became thin on the ground and the Ritmo was drafted into the regulations, with a slightly lighter weight limit to make it competitive with the older cars. In 1993, the Dunlop Fiat Uno Cup was launched. It boasted unheard of promotions at the time, with lots of television coverage, manufacturer support and even start money for all of the competitors. It was, and indeed still is an unwarranted success, providing affordable, competitive racing as it heads into its 16th season!!! In 1999, the 1400 Punto class was introduced as a step up from the 1300cc Unos, Running 1400cc engines with a competition camshaft and bigger carb, they had 25bhp more than an Uno and ran on slick racing tyres. These cars also still run today and have proved to be popular, reliable and competitive. |
